Lightarted Living: Saying Good-Bye to a Weary Old Dog

Saying Good-Bye to a Weary Old Dog

When Tomorrow Starts without Me

By David M Romano

"When tomorrow starts without me,
 And I'm not there to see;
The sun will rise and find your eyes
All filled with tears for me.
I wish so much you wouldn't cry
The way you did today,
Remembering how I'd lay my head
In your lap that special way.
I know how much you love me,
As much as I love you,
And each time that you think of me,
I know you'll miss me too."

"When tomorrow starts without me.
Please try to understand,
An angel came and called my name
And petted me with her hand,
She said my place was ready,
And it was my time to go.
But, as I turned to heel away,
A tear fell from my eye.
It seemed almost impossible,
I was leaving you."

"I thought about our lives together,
I know you must be sad,
I thought of all the love we shared,
And all the fun we had.
Remember how I'd nudge your hand,
And poke you with my nose?
The frisbee I would gladly chase,
The bad guy, I'd "bark and hold"."

"If I could relive yesterday,
Just even for awhile,
I'd wag my tail and kiss you,
Just so I could see you smile."

"So when tomorrow starts without me,
Don't think we're far apart.
For every time you think of me,
I'm right there, in your heart."

Laisser-Passer, Otter--Go Gently into the Night

Otter, the weary old dog, gently eases into the place of freedom and perpetual deer chasing. Come this way, Otter. Welcome to Laisser-Courre, the place where dogs are loosened. You are loved and you will be missed. May there be many deer to chase.

Definitions from Old French Dictionary

Laisser-Aller: Ease; Freedom; Unrestraint; Easiness; Yieldingness

Laisser-Courre: The place where dogs are loosened. Laisser-Courre refers to the place of hunting so we interpret it as the place where dogs are loosened in the great perpetual hunting place in the sky where they experience the ultimate unrestrained freedom to run.

Laisser-Passer: Permission to go. In the end we must yield to the natural course of life and give them permission to pass on to the next life.

A big thank you to David M Romano for such a comforting poem.

How to Easily get from Here to There: Vincent the Cat's Simple Advice

How to get from Here to There with Ease

Meet Vincent--a truly helpful cat.  When his human, Sue Flynn packs for a trip to visit the grandkids Vincent likes to sit in the middle of her suitcase to supervise and keep a close eye on things.

Since Vincent is an expert supervising day-to-day human activities, he's observed humans are always traveling from here to there while tending to get a bit twitter-patted so he thought he would pass on a little helpful advice for all fellow travelers to ease their way.

Maintain a Stance of Calm Alertness

"When you're traveling from here to there, transitions are easier when you maintain a stance of calm alertness", says Vincent.  "Keep your attention on what you seek and when the opportunity presents itself, pounce.

Got Catnip?

"Know what serves as your catnip and always pack plenty wherever you go," says Vincent.
"What is catnip you ask? For us, catnip is a delightful herb that when eaten can have a calming effect for cats and when smelled can have a stimulating effect. It can also act as a pest repellent!  While this is catnip for cats, humans need to discover what can serve as their catnip to stimulate or calm them."

"In summary, know your catnip and always have plenty on hand to help you maintain just the right state of calm alertness--and keep away the pests disrupting your calm alertness," advises Vincent.

Discover Your Catnip to Maintain Calm Alertness at All Times

What's your catnip? A calming walk or energizing run? A quiet moment of solitude or an energizing chat? A refreshing catnap or a refreshing cup of coffee or tea?

"Just like catnip can have different effects on different cats, what energizes and calms you--your catnip--is specific to you," says Vincent.

"Once you figure out what your catnip is, apply liberally."
"A little nip now and then never hurt anybody," says Vincent.

Arlo the Cat Shows the Proper Way to Catnap

A Little Nap Now and Then Never Hurt Anyone

Vincent says: "Change an 'i' to an 'a' and you turn catnip into catnap. What could be better than taking catnaps throughout the day to refresh and reset your brain to a calm and alert state?"

Traveling from here to there can take it out of you, and along the way a calm alert stance can quickly turn into a frenzied and intense state leading to a wary, fearful state when you fail to balance.
Catnaps keep you balanced and ready for opportunities to pounce.
Catnaps are the ultimate catnips for calming. If you don't have time for a quick catnap, try a bit of purring (calm breathing) and slow eye blinks while staring off into space.
Vincent the Cat

Accept the Purr-fection of Life

When you accept you are exactly where you're meant to be it really doesn't matter if you're here or there, or coming or going.

"The ultimate catnip is taking a positive expectation with you wherever you go," says Vincent. "Expect your life to be good and joyous. When you accept 'everything is purr-fect' it's easier to maintain a calm alert state and be ready to pounce on opportunities in the blink of a cat's eye."

A Final Note from Vincent

If you live with cats Vincent especially wants you to pay close attention to these tips when you're going out of town and leaving your cat behind or taking your cat with you. Vincent thinks either option is fine as long as you closely follow his advice and apply it liberally to the cat.

"What's that, Vincent?"
"Remember CATNIP!"

Arlie the Wise Cat Speaks~How to Survive Nine Lives

Persistence and Confidence are Key for Nine Lives

Arlie the Wise is a 'Dog-Cat' who always wants to be in the thick of things--going on walks with the dogs and humans; confidently exploring his environment; and being the designated greeter of humans to his home.

As Arlie sees it, the world is ours to conquer. Why else would we be given nine lives if we weren't intended to live life boldly and confidently?

In the beginning, Arlo the Wise came to live with his human in the Art Studio with two other rescued cats--Mr Bojangles and Blackie (Tar Fondu). Every day the dogs from the big house-- Rosie and Otter--would sit outside the studio to view and smell the cats through the big slightly opened windows.

The other fraidy-cats had no interest in befriending these beasts. But Arlo was a different story. He saw the outside and these interesting creatures and he wanted to go where the action was. He wanted to follow the human out to the big house at the end of the day to be part of what went on in there.

From the beginning Arlo was a big gregarious cat willing to stake his nine lives on his ability to overcome challenges and lead the way for all to live in harmony, no matter what species or breed.

When Arlie the Wise looked out into the world beyond, he saw interesting things to explore, not things to be feared. Sure, he had his moments. What cat wouldn't. You don't get to survive nine lives without being a bit wary. But he was mostly inquisitive as well as street smart.

It took three years for Arlie the dog-tamer to fully tame his dogs, Otter and Rosie. They just weren't having any of it at first. They clearly thought it would be better to chase off this feline interloper than to allow it to co-exist in their habitat. But Arlo was persistent and confident, and he would not be deterred.

So Damn Tenacious!

Over time, Otter and Rosie had to admit there was just something about this cat that was growing on them. He was so damn tenacious. Eventually they not only acquiesced, they gave Arlo a spot on the group dog bed in the big house, and accepted his confidant companionship on family walks. Today they're just old friends who hang out together.

Arlie the Wise Cat Says Be Other-Conscious, Not Self-Conscious

Arlie the Wise never overthinks things. He acts instinctually, knowing that to survive nine lives we have to trust our gut and be bold. There's no time to be self-conscious in this life. We must look out into the great world out there and see what we want to explore, and then go for it.

We can learn a thing or two from Arlie. He doesn't let others view of him get in his way. He is just who he is and acts accordingly in determined pursuit of the life he desires.

Three perspectives make up how we see ourselves and our ability to make our way in the world: 1) Our view of ourselves; 2) Our view of other's view of us; and 3) Other's view of us.
As humans we can get tangled up contemplating these views that determine how we feel about ourselves. Giving too much thought to what others think of us can stop us dead in our tracks--wasting one of our nine lives.

But we are in charge of two out of three of those views influencing how we feel about our ability to make our way in the world. If we simply stop overthinking, accept who we are, and act on the world unselfconsciously, like Arlo the cat, we can change other's view of us and knock down barriers to our freely and successfully exploring the world around us.

Arlie the Wise Cat Speaks~How to Survive Nine Lives

Arlie the Wise says:
💓'I experience love wherever I go.'💓'Be not afraid. Conquer the World.'💓'Be bold. Believe in yourself. The world is yours.'💓'Be Catnip for others. Go unselfconsciously into the world: Be Yourself--letting the law of attraction work for you.'💓

Dogs Make Us Want to be Better Humans

Dogs Soften Our Hearts

💓Hannah the Elbow Nudger 💓
A Kindred Spirit with a Soft Heart and a Buttery Soul

Let the Magic Begin~Again

'Hannah the Gentle' slipped into our lives last January. After losing Arrow, our 14 year old dog the end of the previous year, we planned on waiting a year before getting another dog.

But plans are for changing--and Hannah showed up to grace our lives and work her magic. She softened our hearts and made it easier to open our hearts and home to another dog sooner than scheduled.
When I first met Hannah at the insistence of Bev, a volunteer at the Jackson County Animal Shelter, she had just been adopted. I talked to Hannah at the kennel door, wishing her well in her new home. I whispered to her that she was just what I was looking for, and if things didn't work out I'd be happy to give her a home.

As luck would have it the following week I got a call from the Shelter Manager asking me if I was wanting to foster or was I just looking to find a new dog after the loss of my other one. Neither, I said. I was just staying open.

"But having said that...I did see a dog who was already adopted--Hannah--who was just what I was looking for."

Two hours later she called back to say, "It's your lucky day. Hannah has just been returned."

I really didn't care why she was returned, I knew she had found a way to make it back to me! And I knew luck had nothing to do with it...it was sheer magic!

For such a soft and gentle girl, turns out she had one hard and fast rule--we must walk daily. Oh she starts the negotiation for walk time softly enough with a gentle nudge of the elbow. But soon enough she's much more insistent with the nudges until she gets down right silly to get my attention to say 'It's time to play!' So what can I do but put my shoes on and obey. This is a dog who knows the proper way to greet the day--outside and grateful to be alive.

Dogs Make Life Calmer

Many Moons Ago
In a Far off Place
Lived a Handsome Prince
With a Regal Face

Meet Otter. He is king of the road in oh so many ways--a prince of a dog.

Otter, a rescue dog, magically appeared in my brother and sis-in-law's life fully grown. They really don't know how old he is, but he's well up there in years.

As Otter's nearing his time to move on to the great hunting place in the sky, his humans have begun to grieve and ready themselves for what none of us can truly prepare for--parting with their dear old comfortable friend who has helped them transition through many life changes.

Otter has traveled on the road with his parents, calmly greeting new areas with the same regal presence he always maintains. And he's guided his humans through two moves and showed them how to greet a new abode with grace and gratitude.

At the end of the day, Otter has been the model of calmness, and has shown his humans that life is to be enjoyed, not feared, one day at a time.

Dogs Show Us We Belong and We're Loved

No matter where you go or who you're with, dogs want to be with you. They'll sit quietly by your side if you're feeling low and keep you company through thick and thin. Through their unconditional love and gratitude for our presence, we perk up and desire to become the human our dogs thinks we are.

"Dogs never talk about themselves but listen to you while you talk about yourself, and keep up an appearance of being interested in the conversation."
Jerome K. Jerome
"I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love. For me they are the role model for being alive."
Gilda Radner

Dogs Don't Care How Many Silly Nicknames We Give Them

The better part of our humanness is often uncovered in our silliness. In silliness we leave behind our tendency to be critical of self and others, and our worries about the future.

Dogs have a way of bringing out unbridled silliness in us. There is nothing better for our spirits than full-throated laughter and silliness brought on by watching or engaging in dog play.

Want to be a better human? Engage in silly play with a dog at least once a day.

Dogs Show Us 'It is Good to Play'

Dogs show us 'it is good to play' and they show us it is good to relax after playing. For dogs there are two states of being in life--playing and relaxing--with eating and loving in between.

Want to be a better human? Practice living like your dog--play, relax, eat and love.

"In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi-human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog."
Edward Hoagland

Dogs Know Who You Are and Accept You Exactly As You Are

Dogs don't judge you (even if they make judgments for you about other people or animals). They enjoy the show and just want to be with you to see it all.

Want to be a better human? Have a heart to heart with your dog once a day. They'll never steer you wrong with their advice.

"You can say any fool thing to a dog, and the dog will give you this look that says, `My God, you're RIGHT! I NEVER would've thought of that!' "
Dave Barry

Dogs Show Us How to Live in the Moment

Come on dog! Quit lolly-gagging.
Nothing's out there! Nothing to see here.
Why must you stop and stare?

Come human! Don't you see? Don't you see?
Wonders as far as the nose can smell and the eyes can see.
