Saying Good-Bye to a Weary Old Dog

When Tomorrow Starts without Me

By David M Romano

"When tomorrow starts without me,
 And I'm not there to see;
The sun will rise and find your eyes
All filled with tears for me.
I wish so much you wouldn't cry
The way you did today,
Remembering how I'd lay my head
In your lap that special way.
I know how much you love me,
As much as I love you,
And each time that you think of me,
I know you'll miss me too."

"When tomorrow starts without me.
Please try to understand,
An angel came and called my name
And petted me with her hand,
She said my place was ready,
And it was my time to go.
But, as I turned to heel away,
A tear fell from my eye.
It seemed almost impossible,
I was leaving you."

"I thought about our lives together,
I know you must be sad,
I thought of all the love we shared,
And all the fun we had.
Remember how I'd nudge your hand,
And poke you with my nose?
The frisbee I would gladly chase,
The bad guy, I'd "bark and hold"."

"If I could relive yesterday,
Just even for awhile,
I'd wag my tail and kiss you,
Just so I could see you smile."

"So when tomorrow starts without me,
Don't think we're far apart.
For every time you think of me,
I'm right there, in your heart."

Laisser-Passer, Otter--Go Gently into the Night

Otter, the weary old dog, gently eases into the place of freedom and perpetual deer chasing. Come this way, Otter. Welcome to Laisser-Courre, the place where dogs are loosened. You are loved and you will be missed. May there be many deer to chase.

Definitions from Old French Dictionary

Laisser-Aller: Ease; Freedom; Unrestraint; Easiness; Yieldingness

Laisser-Courre: The place where dogs are loosened. Laisser-Courre refers to the place of hunting so we interpret it as the place where dogs are loosened in the great perpetual hunting place in the sky where they experience the ultimate unrestrained freedom to run.

Laisser-Passer: Permission to go. In the end we must yield to the natural course of life and give them permission to pass on to the next life.

A big thank you to David M Romano for such a comforting poem.

Thank you, Molly. Otter was such a great dog and companion to my brother and sister-in-law. We are all so deeply connected through our animals.

Sue, some people don't understand how difficult the loss of a pet is, but this poem would surely make them understand. Sorry for your family's loss.

Jean, animals are better positioned to engage our hearts than other humans. They add so much to our lives and leave a big hole when they're gone.
