The New Year Owl Brings Joy and Hope

IT'S ALWAYS WORTH THE WAIT

"Let us, then, be up and doing,
with a heart for any fate;
still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait."

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

AWESOME SCREECH OWL

This tiny Western Screech Owl has delighted all
on our walking trail in 2022 by the occaisional
roosting in the nook of a stump nearby.

Sightings have increased in December
bringing much joy and a festive
atmosphere on the promenade.

When the owl is sighted, the lucky humans look on
in quiet awe, knowing what a miracle
it is to witness this stunning creature.

QUIETLY OVERFLOWING WITH JOY

Welcome, welcome tiny screech owl!
We've waited patiently to see you,
and finally here you are!

Nestled in the tree stump,
quiet as can be,
Thank you so much
for showing yourself to me!

MIRACLES SWOOP IN

Miracles swoop in,
in the shape of an owl.
Hearts soar at the sighting
of the trail owl.

Anticipation builds among the hikers--
The tiny owl with the bowtie
is all the talk of the town.

Please, oh please,
let the next owl sighting be mine.

Thank you Natasha Vilas for sharing your photo of our owl.

We are starting to hear these owls now at our house at night. They sound like little ping-pong balls. They don't screech. They are starting to mate. Also we are hearing great horned owls do there mating calls. Up until 3 years ago, the screech owl parents would bring the offspring to our yard to teach them to hunt at dusk and down. Quite social they are. We also have eagles around here and the only thing that I can think of why they have not returned to teach hunting skills, is that the eagles have had a few snacks. I have not found their nesting sites to date but will keep looking. How wonderful it is for you to have them along your trail.
